Spring Research Projects
Rail Trapping - It’s not often that one makes history, but that’s exactly what happened last year (2006) on the rail research project. One of the targeted species of our project is the King Rail, an endangered species in Ohio. Spring 2006 - 112 Rails total (5 kings) Spring 2007 - 99 Rails total (0 kings) Spring 2008 - 188 Rails total (1 king) We are out there every morning checking the traps, if your interested in coming along call Tom Kashmer (419-683-4900)

Neo-Tropical Migrant Bird Banding This was another of our first projects. Members assist with netting, banding , weighing, measuring and releasing migratory birds at Darby Marsh in Port Clinton, Ohio. This closed marsh is part of the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Because of the success of the rail research we no longer run this project every day during the spring and fall, but if you have a group that would be interested in experiencing the beauty of migration, contact Tom Kashmer, gcws@nwonline.net.

GCWS has adopted a two mile stretch of highway east of Gibsonburg, Ohio along State Route 600. Trash Pickup is every spring and fall, watch the newsletter/Upcoming Events page for more details.
West Sister Island Project - West Sister Island is the nesting grounds for many species of heron, egret and cormorant on Lake Erie. the Ohio Division of Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Black Swamp Bird Observatory and GCWS invade the island once a year to count nests and band the young. Green Creek in the News - In 2007 Mike Rowe from the Discovery Channel Show Dirty Jobs came out to West Sister Island and shot an episode of his show! |
