Winter Research Projects

Cabin Banding -

Banding every weekend from November to March out at Tom's Cabin on Green Creek. Nets are set up around Birdfeeders, and banding is conducted to learn about the return habits of feeder birds during the winter. We catch LOTS of American Goldfinches, along with sparrows, a few woodpeckers and other visitors.

2007-2008 Cabin Banding results - 606 birds were banded - full report to come later

What is Bird Banding?

Saw-Whet Owl Banding -

Every fall/winter GCWS conducts a banding project in the woods of Green Creek to try and capture Saw-Whet Owls. These tiny owls migrate through our area every fall on their trip south. They are the smallest owl in our area. The timing of this research varies from year to year depending on the weather, contact Tom Kashmer (gcws@nwonline.net).

Christmas Bird Count -

Every December GCWS partners with Black Swamp Bird Observatory to conduct a Christmas Bird Count in the Fremont Area. It is usually the second Sunday before Christmas. Birders from all over the area come to count the birds that are staying the winter, see the beautiful marshes and woods in their dormant states and meet in the evenings for food and fellowship.
